Havstjerne CO2 storage
The Havstjerne project (EXL 006 Havstjerne) is a pioneering carbon capture and storage (CCS) development located in the North Sea on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, 135 kilometers southwest of the city of Stavanger on the Norwegian mainland.
Positioned as one of the first to-market CCS projects in Europe, Havstjerne is strategically designed to offer permanent and scalable offshore CO2 storage.
The partnerships intend to develop a system for transporting CO2 by ship to the Havstjerne license and thus offer a flexible and scalable solution, offering storage to emitters from around Europe.

Awarded by the Norwegian Ministry of Energy in 2023
- Primary storage site: Sandnes Formation (2,250–3,300 m below sea level)
- Seal system: Tau Formation (primary) + Cretaceous package (secondary)
- Location advantage: Proven geology, existing data, and ideal offshore access

SEAL SYSTEM
- Tau Formation: 115 m thick, excellent seal capacity (confirmed via pressure testing)
- Cretaceous layers: Additional 1,177 m of secondary seal
- Proven by the nearby Yme oil field and multiple wells
